Federal BOP Release Paths
No BOP prison was identified within Webster County. The federal system still matters when a local booking ends in transfer to the U.S. Marshals Service or when a federal sentence follows. “Released to USMS” on a Webster County jail entry means the county relinquished custody. It does not establish community release.
After federal designation and BOP entry, a sentenced person may be held at a BOP institution outside Mississippi or moved among federal facilities. A later BOP release date belongs to that federal custody episode. It should not be assigned to a separate Webster County booking unless the identifiers, dates, and federal court record connect the two.
Search Federal BOP Releases
The official BOP Inmate Locator accepts a name with age, race, and sex filters, or a BOP, DCDC, FBI, or INS number. A unique register number is safer than a name because names can collide. BOP says its comprehensively searchable records begin in 1982, so older federal records require a different archival path.
- Select the number search when a federal register number is available.
- For a name search, enter the legal name and use the offered filters carefully.
- Compare the register number, age, race, and sex with the known federal case.
- Read the location or status and any release date exactly as displayed.
- Use the federal court or BOP contact route to resolve a result that does not fit the known custody chain.
The Webster County release-search hub explains the broader county, state, and federal source boundaries. A county bond release will not appear in BOP merely because the arrest involved a serious charge.
BOP Locator Release Fields
The BOP Locator is designed for federal records, not county bookings or ICE civil detention. Record the fields as a dated observation because public interfaces can change. A visible release date supports the federal record represented by that register number.
| Field | Use |
|---|---|
| Federal register number | Identifies the federal record and avoids a name-only match. |
| Name | Must be reconciled with aliases or changed names in the case. |
| Age, race, and sex | Filters and public identifiers used to distinguish results. |
| Location or custody status | Shows whether BOP reports a facility or a non-custody status. |
| Release date | The date supplied for the federal BOP record when available. |
“Not in BOP custody” can reflect release, another custodian, a pre-BOP USMS stage, or a record limit. It should not be rewritten as “free.” Search the federal docket and identify the custodian responsible for the last known stage.

The official BOP Locator and its disclaimer show the search options used for federal release research.

The screen illustrates the federal number and name-search routes. It does not show a Webster County roster and should never be captioned as a local release list.
Federal BOP Records Contact
Because no BOP facility exists in Webster County, there is no local federal prison address to publish as a release desk. Start with the locator and the facility or status named in the result. For a sentenced person's historical federal record, use the BOP record tied to the register number and the responsible federal court docket. For a person awaiting designation or transport, USMS may still control the prisoner information allowed by policy.

Do not use the Webster sheriff's contact as if it controls BOP release. The sheriff can confirm only its own transfer event and the named receiver. Once the federal agency accepts custody, the federal record becomes the source for later status.
Webster Transfer to USMS
A Webster County booking can end with a transfer to USMS. Request the county booking number, transfer date and time, receiving agency, and public legal authority. That record proves where Webster custody ended. It does not prove when BOP began holding the person, because transport, federal detention, and designation can be separate steps.
If the person does not yet appear in BOP, check the federal court docket and contact the appropriate U.S. Marshals district through its official route. Do not guess that a missing BOP result means release. Recent transport, spelling, aliases, and pretrial status can explain why the BOP search is silent.
Note: USMS commonly handles federal prisoner custody and transport, while BOP generally holds people serving federal sentences.
BOP Release Versus Webster Release
Two release dates can both be accurate when they describe different custody episodes. A person may leave Webster County Jail for federal custody on one date and later leave BOP custody on another. The first is a county transfer. The second is a federal release event.
| Question | Correct source | Best record |
|---|---|---|
| When did Webster County end custody? | Webster County Sheriff | Dated booking transfer or release line |
| Why did federal detention occur? | Federal court | Docket and detention or sentencing order |
| What BOP status and date are published? | BOP | Locator result tied to register number |
| Was the person in ICE custody? | ICE | ODLS result and ERO contact route |
Match case numbers and identifiers before connecting the records. A BOP release date cannot retroactively establish why the county jail ended its custody.
Confirm a Federal Discharge
A locator result is useful, but formal confirmation may require the responsible federal record. Preserve the result date, register number, status phrase, and release date. Then compare the federal docket for supervised release, sentence completion, or another order. Supervised release is a federal court status after imprisonment and is not the same as continued BOP confinement.
When sources conflict, compare the event each one records. A county transfer, BOP admission, BOP release, and start of federal supervision can all have distinct dates. Report them as a sequence. Do not merge them into a single “release date” unless the source records truly refer to the same event.
Federal Negative-Result Checks
First confirm spelling and the unique federal number. Determine whether the person was sentenced, remained pretrial, entered USMS custody, or was transferred to ICE. Search coverage matters. A person held only by a county or by ICE may never have a BOP inmate record.
If the federal record is still missing, document what was searched and when. Use the federal court to identify detention authority and the current or last custodian. A careful finding is “no matching BOP public result was located,” not “the person was released.”
Sequence Federal Release Records
A federal court order is not always the prison gate timestamp. A sentence can end or release can be authorized before final processing is complete. Read the BOP status, release date, and court record together. If federal supervision follows imprisonment, the court or supervising federal office owns that later status, not Webster County.
A Webster booking after the BOP date may be a new local custody episode. Keep dates in order. Do not use an older federal release to explain a new county charge unless official records establish the connection. For a prior handoff, request the sheriff's transfer line and preserve the named receiver.
Names and aliases can create false matches. Compare the public age, race, sex, and federal number, then check the case. Use the minimum identifiers needed. A personal report or search snippet can supply a lead, but it should not override an official federal or county record.
Interpret Federal BOP Status
The locator is comprehensive for federal records from 1982 onward, but not every person in federal criminal process is already in BOP. A pretrial defendant may remain in USMS custody, and a person held only by ICE belongs in another system. Record the exact status phrase and the date checked.
“Not in BOP custody” can include release, another custodian, or a record limitation. A supplied release date supports the federal record tied to that register number, yet the federal docket and responsible agency should resolve an unexpected result.
If federal supervision follows imprisonment, BOP confinement has ended but the court's supervision term may continue. That differs from Mississippi parole and from a Webster County jail release.
Request Webster Federal Handoffs
Ask the sheriff for the admission timestamp, final transfer time, disposition code, receiving agency, and legal authority where public. That record fixes the county-to-federal handoff. It cannot certify a later event created by BOP or USMS.
Request existing electronic fields, segregable nonexempt material, and an estimate. Webster County has no published fixed records fee or hours. Call before travel and keep the federal and county requests separate.
